Jersey Nights

Tonight I went with some of my coworkers to see The Toxic Avenger Musical in New Brunswick.  I wasn’t sure what to expect from a musical about a green mutant bent on cleaning up New Jersey.  But we all agreed the show was a lot of fun.  With song titles like “Hot Toxic Love” and “Kick Your Ass”, lots of arms and legs getting torn off, and plenty of jokes about Newark and blind people, it will be interesting to see how it does once it moves to it’s Off-Broadway run in New York.

But probably the most memorable part of the evening was my introduction to the Rutgers University Grease Trucks.  These late night mobile eateries parked just off campus specialize in philly cheesesteaks, chicken fingers, french fries and mozzarella sticks…all in one sandwich!

The Snore is moving inland

In the next week or so I will be moving to Red Bank, about a half mile from the theatre, into a studio apartment.  Red Bank isn’t exactly a Shore town, but it’s close enough.  I’ve already posted a Walking Tour, so you can check back through the archives for a taste of my new digs.

The Dork Report: Week 5

(Sorry for the delay…had some issues with Tumblr for a few days)

It’s a sad day in Graceland, Impersonator fans.  Or maybe Atlantic City is a more appropriate hometown.  Anyway, the wheels came flying off since the last Dork Report culminating in an embarrassing first loss of the season to the previous winless Nasty B.  Where to begin?  Well, I built this team on WR depth, drafting 3 top tier receivers, and along with QB Drew Brees, they carried me to an easy 4-0 record.  But that depth fell apart quickly.  Colston has already been out for a few weeks, then Boldin couldn’t go this week because even though his head was alright after the scary hit at the end of last week’s game, he had to sit because of surgery on his broken face (I’m serious!  Broken face!), and all due to an injury to his QB, Calvin Johnson disappeared this week.  On top of it, LDT reinjured his toe, so there is no telling what he will be able to do the rest of the year, and my TE, Tony Scheffler, may be more seriously hurt than first thought.  I don’t even know if I can fill a starting line-up with uninjured players this week!

At least Brees continues to be the best quarterback in the league.  And while my dreams of an undefeated season are dashed, there is still hope that everyone heals in time for the playoffs.

Lots of lineup holes to fill because of the injuries this week, and matched-up against the Turtle, who is also 4-1 and leads the other division, I’m going to need some surprisingly big performances….come on Tim Hightower!

Ugh.

The Dork Report: Week 4

Lots of bye weeks forced me to start Fred Taylor, Edge James, and Chansi Stuckey…at the same time!  And still, the Elvis Impersonators rolled to 4-0 to stay atop the league standings.  Along with Brees, LDT, and Edge (in a surprising breakout), Anquan Boldin put up big point totals that were more than enough to top the Tar-babbies 157-95.  Of course seeing Boldin take that nasty head and have to be immobilized and taken off the field by ambulance at the end of the game on a meaningless play was scary.  It’s good to hear that he is alright and even wants to play next week…and not just because he’s on my fantasy team.

My WR depth has suddenly taken a hit with Boldin likely not up to speed this week and Colston still out.  And with Brees playing the touch Minnesota Defense, this week may be the chance to take down the Elvis Impersonators.  We’ll see what Nasty B can do.  His team is currently 0-3 and one tie.  Time to do some waiver wire work…

The Dork Report: Week 3

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Elvis Impersonators are 3-0 and alone atop the heelshouse league!  I have, admittedly, come about this perfect record with healthy dose of luck.  The team didn’t perform very well this week with the exception of Drew Brees and LDT, and those two alone scored enough points to win the game against Hoss for me.

I’m not going to get too excited at the moment, though.  I’ve had strong starts before only to see injuries wreck my team.  I’m also a little concerned that my team has by far the fewest points scored against it all season…I mentioned the luck.  I am very encouraged, however, by the strong performance by LDT even though he was less than healthy.  Bodes well for the rest of the season…that’s why he’s the best.

Next week, it’s Nick’em and the Med Center Tar-babbies.  He has an interesting team that scored a lot of points last week.  I’m scrambling to fill my line-up since I’ve got 6 players on a BYE week.  That’s 6 out of a roster of 16!  I’m gonna trot Fred Taylor out there this week as my RB2 after a good week last week.  We’ll see how that goes…

I’m also tinkering a lot with my bench and the waiver wire as any good and restless fantasy player is wont to do.  Making move after move swapping players that are never going to start.  I look at it as looking ahead because I’m a bit concerned about my RB situation.  I also floated a trade teaser to Snod in an email yesterday.  I’m a notoriously bad trader.  We’ll see if he bites.  I think he’s a little restless too.

Herringbone Redux

It turns out the breaks in the show were intentional.  So, disregard the comment about BD having an off night.  Though I’m still not sure about it.

The Dork Report: Week 2

I didn’t get to watch much football Sunday afternoon, let alone check in on the fantasy stats, but was relieved to find once I sat down at my computer that the Elvis Impersonators were cruising right along with out me.  In fact, at the time the “Projected Total” for my opponent was about 50 points behind my current score.  So at 2-0, the Impersonators sit atop the division and are one of two undefeated teams.

Last week’s poor performance by Marques Colston turned out to be the result of a thumb injury that will keep him out for 4-6 weeks, but with my WR depth I barely missed him this week.  Calvin Johnson and Anquan Boldin both put up huge numbers and are the reason I won.  They both seem to be headed towards great seasons, and when Colston is healthy, look out!  Brees put up a solid score at QB, and my TE put up a surprisingly large number.  Tony Scheffler put up 22 points…I’m usually thrilled if I can get 10 our of a TE.

There is cause for concern on the RB front, with LDT looking gimpy and not putting up 2nd overall type numbers, and my 3-headed-washed-up-RB2-by-committee is doing nothing.  The Receivers are picking up the slack right now, and I’m sure LDT will do well in the long run, but RB2 will need to be addressed at some point later in the season.

Next up: Hoss, whose curious decision to draft Tom Brady and Peyton Manning in the first 2 rounds paid off in that he has a top QB even though his #1 pick is out for the season, but left him painfully thin at all other positions.

TWIB: This Week In Baseball (with apologies to Mel Allen)

-         The only player that I’ve referred to as “my favorite” since my childhood hero, Ryne Sandberg, retired, Big Z Carlos Zambrano pitched a no-hitter in his first game since he was injured 9 days ago.  It was the first Cubs no-no since 1972, and the first no-hitter at a neutral site in baseball history.

-         The Cubs only competition for a playoff spot just, inexplicably, fired their manager with 2 weeks to go in the season.

-     I have a ticket to go to the fourth-to-last game in Yankee Stadium history on Wednesday.  And, thanks to Sarah and NYU, only paid $12 for it.
