The Dork Report: Draft Day

Since I haven’t been blogging much lately, I am introducing a new feature: The Dork Report.  This will be a weekly update on my fantasy football team, the Elvis Impersonators.  I am fully aware that none of you will care about this, but it is my blog, and this is my “I’m Keith Hernandez” moment.

A little background on the Elvis Impersonators and the Heel’s House League: I have been playing with (basically) the same group of guys for the last 6 or 7 years.  We have 9 or 10 usuals and then fill out the league of 12 with new guys each year.  This year’s competition consists of my buddies Scott, Hoss, Nick, Turtle, Lee, Nasty B, Snod, Jared Turner, Mac, and league rookie, Chad.  The Impersonators are a perennial playoff contender, and were the 2006 League Champions.

I traveled back to North Carolina to join the guys for a live draft this past weekend.  Let’s just say that the title of this feature was inspired by the responses I got when I told “outsiders” the reason I made the 7-hour trip south.

I drafted 2nd, the first time I’ve ever had a pick that high, and had LaDanian Tomlinson (the consensus #1 pick) fall to me after Jared took Adrian Peterson.  You can do a whole lot worse than building a team around LDT.  The league scoring is jacked-up so that WRs and QBs are much more valuable than in traditional scoring leagues.  A point is awarded for every WR reception and QB completion.  Keeping this in mind, I followed the long wait after my first pick by going WR, QB, WR, WR in rounds 2-5, then in rounds 6-8 took RBs loaded up on RBs that had fallen because of question marks.  I figured that out of the three high-risk-high-reward guys I could find someone to be my second Back each week behind LDT.  Overall, I was happy with my draft, but many times leagues are won with shrewd in-season moves, so I’ll have to stay on my toes.  But for now, here is the Week 1 Elvis Impersonators roster:

QB Drew Brees, Saints

RB1 LaDanian Tomlinson, Chargers

RB2 Edgerrin James, Cardinals

FLEX Calvin Johnson, WR, Lions

WR1 Marques Colston, Saints

WR2 Anquan Boldin, Cardinals

TE Tony Scheffler, Broncos

D/ST Jacksonville Jaguars

K Matt Stover, Ravens

Bench:

Patrick Crayton, WR, Cowboys

Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Colts

Tim Hightower, RB, Cardinals

Jon Kitna, QB, Lions

Deuce McAllister, RB, Saints

Fred Taylor, RB, Jaguars

Kenny Watson, RB, Bengals
